Ultra-Fast Charging Smartphone Battery Charges In 10 Minutes #DigInfo

Docomo has developed a prototype supplementary smartphone battery which can be charged in just 10 minutes, and integrated it into a smartphone jacket.

"This jacket contains a battery that can be charged super-fast. There's one battery built in, and this charges fully in 10 minutes. You can attach the jacket to your smartphone while you're on the move, so the phone gets charged from the jacket."

"I think everyone's had the experience of getting up in the morning and finding they've forgotten to charge their phone. We expect that in the future, there'll be charging counters in all kinds of places, such as convenience stores and restaurants, so people can fully charge their smartphone very quickly."

"This battery is the same as previous ones in the sense that it's a lithium ion battery. But we've used a new material, titanium oxide lithium, for the negative electrode, and this enables fast charging. Here's an actual demonstration. The bottom value is the current during ordinary charging, and the top value is the current during super-fast charging. As you can see, the current is over ten times higher during fast charging."

This prototype jacket is only for the MEDIAS WP smartphone from NEC Casio, and as it requires such a high current, it doesn't support charging via a USB port.

"There's a great need for fast smartphone charging. A lot of customers say their batteries are big and take a long time to charge. To meet their needs, we'd like to utilize this exhibition to speed up commercial development of this jacket."
